Motorcycle Top Box Size Guide: 30L vs 45L vs 65L (2026)

Motorcycle top box size guide for LatAm importers: what 30L, 45L and 65L cases really hold, rack weight limits and Brazil's 2026 CONTRAN dimension rules.

Motorcycle Top Box Size Guide: 30L vs 45L vs 65L (2026)

Importers pick a motorcycle top box size by the litre figure on the listing, and that is where the returns start. Capacity tells you how much air the shell holds. It says nothing about what the rack on a 160cc scooter will carry, how much usable volume a lid and a lining eat, or what Brazilian traffic law allows behind the seat.

This guide is built from our own production and purchase orders rather than brochures: the real interior dimensions of 30L, 45L and 65L shells, the plate and rack ratings that decide whether a box can leave your warehouse, and the CONTRAN rules that make some aluminium cases illegal on Brazilian roads.

What 30L, 45L and 65L actually hold

Three capacities cover most of the Latin American market, and each maps to a different customer. These are the shells we build, measured as shipped:

CapacityShell dimensions (L × W × H)Realistic contentsSells to
30L45.7 × 38.1 × 28 cm (18″ × 15″ × 11″)One full-face helmet on its side plus gloves and a rain jacketCommuters on 110–150cc scooters and underbones
45L (plastic)41 × 37 × 33.5 cm (16.14″ × 14.56″ × 13.18″)One full-face helmet upright, a rain suit and a slim laptop bagScooter and commuter owners, light delivery
45L (aluminium)46 × 42 × 40 cm (18.1″ × 16.5″ × 15.7″)The same, plus tools or a heavier jacketMixed road and trail use
65L56 × 41 × 34 cm class shellTwo full-face helmets, or a week of clothing and bootsMaxi-scooters, ADV/trail bikes, delivery fleets

Two claims deserve a check before you print a catalogue: a 45L box that holds two full-face helmets exists, but it is the exception — two large modular helmets usually need 55L or more. And a box is only “45L” until you load it; the lid dome, hinge well and liner take their share.

The four shells below cover the whole ladder — from a commuter 30L to a 65L aluminium trunk:

Nominal litres versus usable litres

A full-face helmet measures roughly 35–40 cm long, 30 cm wide and 25 cm high, and its shape — chin bar, spoiler, vents — is what actually fights a shell. The honest minimum for a helmet you insert and remove without swearing is around 35–40L, not the 26–30L some listings claim.

Nominal capacityUsable interior (minus shell, liner and lid well)What fits without forcing
30L~26LOne open-face or small full-face helmet, sideways
35–38L~31–33LOne full-face helmet upright, tight
45L~39LOne full-face helmet + rain gear + gloves
65L~57LTwo full-face helmets, or one helmet + full touring kit

When you write the PO, ask for internal dimensions at the widest and deepest points and at the lid opening — not just the external footprint. A supplier who cannot quote internal dimensions is selling a litre figure, not a product.

The number that really decides: rack and plate limits

The binding limit is the weight the rear rack, subframe and mounting plate will take — and it is lower than most buyers assume.

Mounting system / rackPublished maximum loadNotes
GIVI Monolock plate3 kgCity scooters, helmet and little else
GIVI Monokey, aluminium plate6 kgRoad and trail use
GIVI Monokey, nylon plate10 kgTouring, frequent load
SHAD SH39 / SH484 kg / 8 kgCity / touring
Aftermarket scooter rack (NMAX, Vario class)3–5 kgHeavy-duty mono-racks reach ~10 kg
Owner’s manual rear carrier, commuter scooter5–7 kgUsually the lowest figure in the chain

Three rules follow from that table:

  1. Subtract the empty box. A plastic 30L weighs about 3.5 kg; a 65L aluminium case reaches 8 kg before you load it. A 5 kg rack with a 6.5 kg aluminium box is already over the limit empty.
  2. The lowest figure wins. Bike manual, rack label and plate rating are three different numbers; your real allowance is the smallest of them.
  3. Height amplifies weight. Eight kilos carried high and behind the rear axle loads the front end far more than the same kilos in a tank bag. That is where steering weave, cracked carriers and sagging rear suspension come from.

We rate our cast-iron Honda Navi rack at 150 kg of static load, and that is the rack speaking — the bike’s own subframe and payload rating still govern. Sell rack and box as a matched pair and put both limits on the same page.

The two racks we build for the fits above — rated well past what the bike’s own subframe will take, so the box is never the weak link:

Match the capacity to the bike class

The Latin American fleet is scooter-heavy, and a box that looks proportionate on a 650 trail bike looks absurd on a 125 underbone.

Delivery / motofreteBrazil’s app and courier fleets45–65LReflective strips and locks are a working requirement, not a feature

Brazil alone justifies stocking the upper sizes: the national fleet grew from 26.1 million motorcycles in 2017 to 38.3 million by the first half of 2026 — up 46.8%, driven by delivery work — and manufacturers project 2.07 million units produced in 2026 (Abraciclo). Every bike behind a delivery account is a candidate for a 45L or 65L box, a rack, and a replacement every two or three seasons.

Brazil is the only major Latin American market with published dimension limits for what may sit behind the seat, and they catch importers who stock oversized aluminium cases.

DimensionLimit (Resolution 943/2022, art. 10)
Width60 cm maximum, and never wider than the distance between the inner edges of the mirrors
LengthMust not extend beyond the rear end of the vehicle — except helmet boxes, which may pass it by up to 15 cm
HeightNo more than 70 cm from the box’s central base, measured from the seat
ReflectorsRetro-reflective strips are mandatory on closed boxes (Annex IV)
Mirror visibilityNeither the box nor the load may compromise mirror efficiency

The chapter applies to paid motofrete and mototáxi work, and art. 15 extends it to unpaid cargo transport as well. An oversized or non-reflective box is a serious infraction under the Brazilian Traffic Code — a roadside stop for your customer, and a returns problem for you.

From our pre-shipment checks: the two Brazilian failures we see most are boxes that arrive without retro-reflective strips, and 65L aluminium lids that measure over 70 cm from the seat line once the mounting plate is added. Both are factory-fixable — specify the strip, and ask for the assembled height with the plate fitted before the container leaves.

For Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Chile we have found no equivalent national dimension rule for privately owned motorcycles; there the governing limits are the bike’s payload and rack rating, plus the practical one nobody writes down — a box wider than the handlebars makes lane filtering dangerous from Bogotá to Mexico City.

Our range covers both ends: a 30L PP case with quick-release plate and reflective strip, a 45L universal plastic case with PU lining and back cushion, a 45L magnesium-aluminium case with a 304 stainless lock, and a 65L aluminium case with 2 mm plates, fibreglass-nylon bumper corners and dual stainless locks. Racks ship separately — steel for the NMAX 155, cast iron for the Honda Navi.

What to put in the box: specification checklist

Universal plates are what move in Latin America, because they fit the mixed fleet. Specify the contents of every carton:

  • Mounting plate with stainless bolts and washers — a box without a plate is a support ticket.
  • Quick-release button, so the customer can carry the box indoors.
  • Lock with two keys, plus a keyed-alike option for fleet orders.
  • Retro-reflective strips fitted at the factory for the Brazilian market.
  • Back cushion where the box will carry a passenger.
  • Spare locks, keys and lid gaskets as orderable parts — the highest-margin lines in the accessory catalogue.
  • Assembly sheet in Spanish and Portuguese, not English only.

Order sizes start at a single carton for a test listing and move to full-container quantities with private label, printed cartons and a colour split you fix before quoting — mixed-colour production is where lead times slip.

The QC traps we catch before shipping

  • Missing or mis-positioned gaskets. A 1 mm gap in the lid seal becomes a warranty claim after the first storm.
  • Latch rattle and key binding. Test every lock twice, with the lid loaded.
  • Under-thickness aluminium. 2 mm walls with a thicker rear hinge; thinner shells dent on the first drop.
  • Stickers that claim what the seal cannot. If a listing says “fully waterproof”, the gasket must survive a 30-minute spray test.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 45L top box big enough for two helmets?

Usually not. It fits one full-face helmet with gloves and rain gear, and two open-face helmets in most shells. For two full-face helmets, plan on 55L and above, and check the interior width against the largest helmet you intend to carry.

Can I fit a 65L aluminium box on a 150cc scooter?

Physically yes; mechanically and legally, usually not. A 65L aluminium case weighs 7–8 kg empty while small scooter racks are rated 3–5 kg, and the overhang behind the rear axle makes the front end light and the bike nervous in crosswinds.

Do I need a specific rack, or does a universal plate work?

A universal plate bolts to most rear carriers and is the practical answer for a mixed fleet. Dedicated racks — like our steel bracket for the Yamaha NMAX 155 — fit better, vibrate less and cut fitment complaints, which justifies a higher ticket price.

What are the size limits for a top box in Brazil?

Under CONTRAN Resolution 943/2022 a closed box may not exceed 60 cm in width or run wider than the inner edges of the mirrors, must not extend past the rear of the vehicle (helmet boxes may pass it by 15 cm), and must stay within 70 cm of height measured from its base at seat level. Retro-reflective strips are mandatory. This is a summary, not legal advice — confirm current requirements with your importer or a Brazilian traffic authority before printing a catalogue.
